Our Story

It all started with confusion – the kind that many young students know all too well.

Like many children of immigrant parents, I found myself on a predetermined path toward becoming a doctor. I was a young student at the University of Toronto, double majoring in Psychology (Neuroscience) and Biology, spending more time on the basketball court than in the lab. What those years really taught me wasn't cellular biology – it was that I was on the wrong path.

After graduation, I found myself juggling multiple jobs: managing a furniture company during the day, working as a sales associate at Best Buy in the evenings, and trying to make it at a startup. I was working 70-hour weeks, barely staying afloat. That's when everything changed.

The Turning Point

During a visit from the UK, my brother-in-law took one look at my chaotic schedule and gave me the blunt career advice I desperately needed: "This isn't sustainable. You'll be broken down physically and financially in a few years if you continue at this pace."

That conversation led to a pivotal moment. We sat down and mapped out potential career paths based on my background and personality. But more importantly, he encouraged me to do something I'd never considered before: reach out to professionals in each field and learn about their daily lives.

Those conversations changed everything.

The Power of Direct Advice

Through speaking with lawyers, doctors, financial professionals, and others, I gained insights that no career website or guidance counselor at the time could provide. I learned about the real challenges, the unexpected rewards, and the day-to-day realities of each profession. This direct advice helped me choose law – a path that aligned with my passion for debate, my desire to create change, and my natural inclinations.

Was it easy? Far from it. The journey took me through three countries, countless exams, and $200,000 in debt. But that direct advice helped me navigate each step, from sweating through my first court appearance to finding my niche in technology transactions law.

Throughout my journey, I realized two crucial things:

That's why I started the My Career Shop podcast – to bring real, unfiltered career stories to those who need them most. But in today's rapidly evolving world, where AI and technology are transforming every industry, I realized we needed something more.
